What Then? (based on Luke 16:19-22)

What Then

Luke 16:19-22

Intro : Old man and young man talking. Graduation , job, married, kids, retire, die ??? What then?

If what the bible says is to be believed, then death comes to all men, yet death is not the end. What then? Death comes to all,

James 4:14 “What is your life, a vapor..”

,Job “my days are faster than a weaver’s shuttle”

David, “ There is but one step between me and death.”

Jesus gave a illustration, not a parable, of two men who lived life and die (vs.22).

I. The Death of A Saved Man-What happens when a Saved man dies- ( not a church member per se, rather a man who has confessed his unworthiness and his sin. A man who has confessed Jesus as Savior and Lord, John 14:6).

A. Paradise- this was only before Christ(Eph.4:7-10): now to be absent from the body II Cor 5:6-8,

Now of all the things Jesus could have said about this man, this is the greatest. He was going to a place of comfort until Jesus would come and deliver Him to the Father’s throne.

What then-Rest from his labor (Heb. 4:9) waiting in heaven- one day as a thousand years- (II Pet.3:8), 1999 about 5 seconds in heaven, one day is equal to 86400 seconds. Divide 86400 by number of years Chris has been gone, so 86400 #seconds in a day, divided by 18 years(time since 1999) equals 4.8 seconds.

What then- reunion-I This 4:16-17

What then- return to heaven- for what I The 4.

*rejoicing around the throne( Rev. 4-5),

*judgement seat of believers ( I Cor. 3. Rom 14, II Cor 5, not even a cup of cold water given in His name has gone Unnotcied) ,

Wha Then:

*wedding supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:7),

What then — return to earth, (Rev 19:11-14), Where He will witness……

*the battle (Rev. 19:15-21)

*the throne on earth (Rev. 20:4),

* the rebellion (Rev. 20:7-9)

What then- an end of Satan and sin-(Rev. 20:10)

What then- a new eternal home- (Rev.21:-22)

“we will sing and shout and dance about, the Lamb shall dry our tears,

we will have a grand homecoming week, the first ten thousand years”

II The Death of a Lost Man-there are two men in Jesus illustration: well he died preacher , that was the end, not according to the bible.

A. He died and went to hell (teh opposite of paridise)- to him death was but a door that led to a Christless eternity.

What then- He is tormented (Luke 16:23-24)

*hell is a place where the fire goeth not out (Matt 25:41),

*the worm dieth not(Mk 9:44), and the darkness is so great it can be felt.

What then- a day of judgement- (Rev. 20:11-ff) there he stands before the Lamb, his judge,

What then- because his name is not found- take them away - eternal death (20:15)(II Thes.2:12 “That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”)

Concl: only three groups in hell

fools- no God Ps. 14:1

foolish- could have just didn’t-Pro 27:1, 29:1

fooled- Matt 7:20-23

only way to know for sure you saved:

Rom 8:16 “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”

Gal 4:6 “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

I John 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

I John 4:13 “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

I John 5:10 “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.”
